Session One: Assignment One Question

Q: This week we talked about the role of information systems in a business (Slide 9 of Lecture 1).

Think of a business or organization that you admire, then describe two examples of how that business is supported by information systems. For example, do they use it for operational excellence? Or do they use it to create new products and services?

Ans: Nowadays, technology is getting more and more progressive and popular, many people choose to use online service. Therefore, many companies have on-line service to develop their business.

DHL is one of the global market leaders of the international express and logistics industry, specializing in providing innovative and customized solutions from a single source. It has website and hotline to serve their customer as usual.

For example, their customers can fill in the online shipment details forms, then click the send out button, this form will send to DHL central online system immediately. This can book the shipment to pick up directly, convenient and easier.

On the other hand, when their staffs collect the goods, they also have scanning online devices use to capture shipment information (barcode~tracking number) by themselves and other operations personnel and utilizing a Wi-Fi (wireless local area network connectivity) communications system. And its scanning technology is RFID-ready, which use to read and store data without the need for contact or direct line of sight.

In their website, the customer also can order the packaging material, check the transit time, currency exchange rate and calculate the volumetric weight of shipment, etc. They can enjoy the service and do their jobs online in 24 hours.
